Shockwave (ESWT) FAQs

Only Jenny utilizes shockwave right now.

What is shockwave? Is it the same as ESWT, FPW, or RPW?

Shockwave Therapy is considered a type of regenerative medicine. Unlike medications, injections, and surgery, shockwave utilizes your body’s natural regenerative potential. Shockwave helps areas that have degenerated because of poor blood flow, tissue injury, overuse or weakness. To be clear, medications, injections, and surgery have their place. This is useful when those are not necessary, or to attempt to heal before trying those more invasive procedures. Sometimes shockwave works synergistically with any or all of the above.

Shockwave is also called Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), A coustic Wave Therapy (AWT), Radial Pressure Wave therapy (RPW), Focused Pressure Wave therapy (FPW), and Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT). We only use the radial pressure waves, not the focused pressure waves since we work on more superficial musculoskeletal issues. A physician who has access to imaging will be better suited to FPW for deeper issues (like bone healing).

What conditions is shockwave good for?
Shockwave is great for:

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive, innovative evidence-based, sound-based technology used extensively around the world to stimulate tissue repair and regeneration. Shockwave successfully treats acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain and/or pain that significantly impairs mobility or quality of life. Whether from overuse or direct injury, shockwave boosts your body’s natural healing mechanisms to improve your quality of life.

Areas include:

  • Foot and ankle
  • Lower extremity
  • Upper extremity
  • Back and chest
  • Shoulder
  • Neck
  • Myofascial trigger points
Some conditions that shockwave can help:
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonopathy
  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis
  • Lateral epicondylosis (tennis elbow)
  • Rotator Cuff Injury
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Medial epicondylosis (golfer’s elbow)
  • Calcific tendonitis (supraspinatus tendon, etc.)
  • Patellar tendinosis (jumper’s knee)
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Chronic stress/non-union fractures
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

And many other issues!!

How effective is shockwave?

Some patients report immediate pain relief after the treatment, although the beneficial effec ts of shockwave therapy, are more often experienced after 3 treatments.  Some people take up to four weeks to notice pain relief.  It really depends on your situation, and how long you’ve had it.

According to research,  80% of patients treated report to be pain free and/or have significant pain reduction with as few as six treatments per area.

Here is one such study on Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy from PubMed.

How many sessions of shockwave will I need?

Most people find that as few as 3 to 5 weekly 7 to 10-minute sessions (per area) they notice an improvement.  This will enable you to be on a faster, easier path to feeling better — and back to the activities you love. No risk. No downtime. No surgery, scarring or anesthesia. And extremely high patient satisfaction — more than 80% based on research!

However, what you specifically need is based on many factors that you and Jenny can discuss.  For example, how long have you had the issue?  What other treatments are you concurrently doing?  Are you doing anything in your life that might be aggravating the issue and keeping it from healing?  Things like that.  We can discuss in more detail.  Let Jenny know if you have any questions.

Are there any side effects of shockwave? It is considered invasive?

Side effects & Contraindications

SIDE EFFECTS:

While shockwave is considered non-invasive, side effects can still happen, but they tend to be minor and short-lived. These side effects usually subside within hours, or can persist for up to 10 days (more rare).   Please ensure they have disappeared before resuming treatment.

Mild swelling of the area treated

Mild reddening of the area treated

MilD bruising of the area treated

Mild soreness of the area treated

Skin lesions in cases of previous Cortisone use

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Who Should Avoid Shockwave Therapy?

Although Shockwave is considered safe for most people, the safety and effectiveness of the EPAT®/ESWT procedure may not be suitable under the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Blood Disorders: Those with hemophilia or other bleeding disorders, anyone on blood-thinning medication such as Warfarin, Heparin, and, especially Marcumar
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Cancer or malignancy near the treatment area should consult their doctor first
  • If you have received a steroid injection within 6 weeks (it makes the treatment less effective)
  • If you are taking anti-inflammatories (it makes the treatment less effective)
  • If you have an infection or skin abrasion at the treatment site
  • If you are under 18 (except in the treatment of Osgood-Schlatter disease)
  • If you have significantly low bone density (from osteoporosis)
  • If you have Implants, areas where implants have been removed, damaged implants, and metal inclusions (We need to get clearance from your physician first.)
  • Over superficial endoprosthesis or metal implants (We need to get clearance from your physician first.)
  • Arterial disease, circulatory insufficiency (We need to get clearance from your physician first.)
  • Over cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators, cochlear implants, bone growth stimulators, deep brain stimulators, spinal cord stimulators, and other nerve stimulators.  (We need to get clearance from your physician first.)
  • Shock waves must not be applied to target areas located above air-filled tissue (lungs), nor to any regions near large nerves, vessels, the spinal column or head.

When in doubt, we will not treat. Safety is crucial.

How much does shockwave cost?

If you add shockwave to a Rolfing® session with Jenny, the cost is $150.
If you only want shockwave, the cost is $200 per treatment area (about 30 minutes).

I see that other places sell packages, do you?

No we do not sell packages, and here’s why.

I am offering individual session prices at a package rate. This way you can come in when you feel you need the shockwave, and not over-treat your body just because you’ve already paid for it.

We also never have to deal with refunds if you find that you don’t need more sessions.
