The goal of Rolfing is to balance and organize all of the soft tissues of the body in movement and gravity. The side effects of doing this is that people notice more efficiency in their bodies, reduced pain, and faster recovery from injuries.
“It’s not how deep you, it’s how you go deep.”
Dr. Ida Rolf
Dr. Ida P. Rolf, a biochemist and Rockefeller University Fellow, founded the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration (RISI) in 1971 (recently renamed the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute). Dr. Rolf began her inquiry more than fifty years ago, based on the premise that quality of life and well-being depend in part on the person’s capacity to adapt to the field of gravity. Dr. Rolf created a holistic system to realign, rebalance, reorganize, and reintegrate the whole body structure in movement and gravity. She discovered that she could achieve remarkable changes in posture and structure by manipulating the fascia, the body’s connective tissue system. The notion that proper alignment, physiologic function and anatomical structure are all related led her to develop a system now known as “Rolfing”.
